Sniff out suspicious spending Take a tip from private detectives working on infidelity cases: Before blindly accusing, check credit and checking account statements for odd spending activity. “We use bank statements on a daily basis,” says Marc Bourne, vice president for Know It All Intelligence Group in Bensalem, Pa. “It’s an integral part of our investigation.”

As you probably know full well by now, chargeback is a transaction that is returned (charged back) as a financial liability by the card issuer to the acquirer and most often to the merchant for resolution after the associated sale has been settled. Most of the usual chargeback and re-presentment rules apply in a PIN debit environment, but there are some specifics that I will touch on in this and following articles.
This post uses Visa chargeback reasons and reason codes, but the principals apply to MasterCard transactions as well.
Before initiating a chargeback, the issuer is required to attempt to honor the transaction. If that fails and the sales amount has already been billed to the cardholders account, the issuer must issue a credit.

I think by now we all know that if our credit cards are stolen, by all means, call your bank. The bank manager or teller is sort of like the neighborhood cop. If you’re in trouble, that’s who you go to.
Well, almost always.
As you’ll see in a moment, in this week’s look at unusual credit card crimes, in very rare instances your bank may be the last place you want to go.
